Volume 1 was originally published in 1817 and Volume 2 in 1818. following the trend we sell each volume separately.
It's a charming Georgian book. I have tried to preserve the atmosphere of a book of this period. Retaining most of the original typeface. I have enlarged the text by about 15% and the illustrations by about 20 % putting two of the original sheets to the page in this tall format
If you can find an elusive copy of the original it will be expensive sad to say most of the original copies have been broken up and their illustrations watercoloured and framed. Of course when it was first published it would have been far too expensive for ordinary people to afford, costing more than a labourers annual income.
It is pleasing that both volumes are now available each for about the price of a paperback novel.
The book is generally thought to be one of the better and more accurate histories of the area and appears in the bibliographies of most subsequent histories. I personally have found it very readable and interesting, I would recommend it to anyone interested in our local history.
