1831 The Picturesque Pocket Companion To Margate Ramsgate Broadstairs & Parts Adjacent
Kidd, William & Bonner, G. W. (Engravings/illustrator)
£6.99
130pp tall folded A4 format (the same as this catalogue) stapled booklet of short histories and pictures of places from the Thames to in and around Thanet originally published in 1831.
Before the railway came to East Kent the most practical form of transport from London was the paddle steamer. For those taking a cure or engaged in the fad of sea bathing this was one of the most popular tourist guides. It covers the journey from London, describing features of interest along the Thames. It also describes the Isle of Thanet in detail.
For a Kentish travel book of this period original copies are still fairly common and relatively cheap at about £125 however I and some of my fellow local book collectors have found it convenient to have a modern reprint. Those with an interest in the history of the area who have discovered it for the first time have found its readable text and charming wood engravings a delight.
